191 million heartbeats - twelve hundred times is out now

at long last, we've released our third studio album, twelve hundred times.

you can listen to it, or purchase it on CD/digital/both, at our new store. old stuff (shirts and back catalog) are still available on the old store.

we want to say thanks to everybody who helped make the album happen, especially Nao Anzai and Bart Kowalski.

we loves you.

new album, twelve hundred times, to be released october 14

it's done.

the carrier pigeons have been dispatched, we lit a special fire in the upstairs fireplace, and i'm wearing a white camellia for the first time in five years. hello, metaphorical boys.

the new laura album, Twelve Hundred Times, will be released on october 14. here's a sampler video to whet your carbon-steel appetites: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kK7H97kRx9w

as near as i can say, it'll have been 191 million heartbeats since our last full-length studio release. for that, we're truly sorry. for what it's worth, all of us here think you should be very proud of your heart; it just keeps going, and you never give it a break.

we'll let you know as soon as the album's available for order on our website. in the meantime, check out the first two singles from the album on youtube:

re: the album - we are getting to know her much better now. the album is a she as it turns out and she is nearing completion and/or fruition and is quite different to her older sisters - she knows a lot of things they didn't seem to know, which seems backwards but makes sense i guess.

our unlimited love to you,

laura

laura sitrep - 2011-02-15 - new single "this grey earth" streamable, plus tour dates for march

big news #1 (important stuff)

laura is looking at you like you are food.

i think maybe she's making a complicated silent pun to do with TB and consumption and implying you're sick. or the disease. or a vector.

maybe she's just hungry. she has lost weight. i can't tell any more.

big news #2 (THIS GREY EARTH)

as of seconds ago, you can stream THIS GREY EARTH, the second single from our upcoming album from basically any site on the internet, by which i mean any of these four:

       facebook: http://www.facebook.com/lauranoise
       youtube: http://www.youtube.com/lauraisnotaband
       myspace: http://www.myspace.com/lauranoise
       lastfm: http://www.last.fm/music/Laura

or if you want to go to the source:

       laura: http://www.lauratheband.com/

we are more ourselves than we have ever been, and so are you. i would like to say at this point that it's nice to be putting tunes out there again. we luvs yoo.

big news #3 (march tour dates):

we are touring in march; free the entire month in your calendar. start in on jumping jacks. ask for clarification of straighforward orders. cry for no apparent reason in meetings. allow sharp-edged tools to become blunt.

we are touring on the back of our free single mark the day, about which people are saying nice things like:
"it's enough to darken the sun at midday" - inpress magazine (single of the week)

"It's spectacularly cinematic; the mournful strings and heroic climbs are full of tragedy, but the vocals give a gentle human heart" - beat magazine (single of the week)

we like people. we no longer count laura as a people, just to be clear.

here are the dates for the shows:

friday 4th march @ enigma bar, adelaide
    - tix: http://www.moshtix.com.au/event.aspx?id=44068

saturday 5th march @ east brunswick club, melbourne
    - tix: https://www.cornerhotel.com/boxoffice/?venue=EB&gig=1299317400

friday 18th march @ sandringham hotel, sydney
    - tix: http://www.moshtix.com.au/event.aspx?id=44084

‘mark the day’ single and promo clip out now for free download

it’s free! take it, we want you to have it!

download the mp3 here

it’s from our forthcoming album, which we’re finishing off as i write this.

in my head moth-wing dust and ash are basically the same thing

we have a new song for you. it’s called mark the day. we are very proud of it. sure, we love all our children, but this one has lovely white teeth, stands up straight, and worships the same gods as us. also, it mutters things like “i taste ash” and “elegantly choke” whenever the sun goes behind a cloud or a crow lands on the back fence.

it’s going to be a free radio/web-only single.

on the one hand, we’d like to release it right now, but on the other hand, we’re not going to until next week, because it still needs to be coated in a thin layer of opalescent moth-wing dust or something.

i could make a long series of true statements about it, but they wouldn’t make anybody happy, so i’m not going to do that.

so my recommendations are:

1) keep an eye on the website. and the laura facebook. and the laura myspace.

2) in the mean time, bone up on some recent laura history.

appendix 1: legend to symbols:

moth-wing dust (literal): a thin layer that protects and insulates the moth’s wing and incidentally makes it aesthetically nicer.

moth-wing dust (figurative; musical production): a thin layer of subtle but noticable adjustments that protect broadcast and playback equipment and incidentally make the music sound much more gooder.

ash: a thin layer of post-apocalyptic volcanic cinder which covers and protects the land, insulating and protecting it from the corrupting influence of light which would otherwise fuel assorted biological and meteorological processes that would ultimately lead to detestable erosion of stone by weather and the mechanical action of plant and animal life.

exercise for the reader:

given the above, what does it mean that your light-fittings are full of moth-wing dust?

3RRR live to air :: sunday november 8 2009

lovers, others,

Part one: What's happening

laura will be playing a 3RRR live-to-air on Sunday Nov 8 at 5pm on Owen McKern's Delivery.

we love it when you love it and you will love it when you see it live and we will be live and so you will love it and so we will love it, so:

Part two: how to love it

come down and see the show live!

if you get in quick, RRR is currently giving away double passes at their website: www.rrr.org.au/whats-going-on/rrr-presents/live-to-airs/

you will also love it if you hear it over the radio: 102.7fm

and you will also love it when you hear it streamed over the internet: www.rrr.org.au/programs/streaming

but you may not love it if it's just described to in detail to you after the fact by an acquaintance, so probably best to go with one of the above options.

laura loves you

mould

***** was in the garden on the trike and i was getting the clothes out of the machine. i was angry because somehow a flag had gotten in with the whites. your work shirts were all ruined, and i was worrying about where the food would come from.

then i think i remember the phone ringing, but i didn't answer it. i just listened to the ringing getting louder and louder, and when the noise stopped, i realised the traffic noise had gone away too. i felt really cold, and i ran out to find *****, and he'd bumped into the big step by the drain and hurt his knee. i could see he was crying - his mouth was wide open, and his head was tilted right back - but i couldn't hear anything. he was older all of a sudden, and calm again, and he stood up and stepped over the trike and walked over to the lemon tree and picked one, low-down on the shady side. it was ripe, but i could see blue-green dust on the dark side where the mould had gotten to it. ***** ran his finger through the mould, and then smeared it over the cut on his knee, and then he was little again and standing in front of me, saying:

"it's okay, we can work all this stuff out again. we've done it before."

on tour with cult of luna

for our first set of shows in six months, laura is accompanying sweden's cult of luna down the east coast:

if i had a budget of two words to explain cult of luna to you, then they would be "sludge" and "post", because "sludge" gets you interested, and "post" is so cheap i could probably cash in the rest of the budget and spend it on a packet of sandwiches.

for the logistical centre-types amongst you, here's laura's final packing list for this seven-person, four-day tour (that's 28 person-tour-days, remember):

  • lawyer (1)
  • gun (1) and either
  • packet of sandwiches (1) or, depending on market conditions
  • "post" (1)

if you have a small amount of cash coming to you through some kind of "post" cash-back offer or mebbes a lil tax break, then why not invest it in what is, eerily, a kind of combination of the two, by purchasing a copy of our e.p. "yes maybe no" from our thrice-beloved partners @ elevation recordings?

Critics agree:

  • it's a "recording" that includes "noises"
  • yes maybe no is "frenetic, dark, complex and layered"
  • "dark, delicate melodies twitch and twinkle before being ripped apart by massive walls of distortion and feedback."
  • attendees of laura's shows grunt "like a troupe of whoring sea-donkeys"

our love for you and your whoring sea-donkey troupe is strong,
laura
